His glorious days as a photojournalist during World War II are a thing of the past; Meanwhile, W. Eugene Smith leads a secluded life. When the editor of Life magazine asks him to travel to Japan to investigate the mercury poisoning afflicting residents of the fishing village of Minamata, he initially refuses. But a passionate Japanese translator named Eileen convinces him to accept the assignment. Smith was finally convinced.

CRITICISM

The initial shot, which recreates the intimate moment of mothering in the most famous photograph of W. Eugene Smith Tomoko in her bathroom in black and white, promises a more subtle take on the systematically hushed poisoning scandal in the title. But when, a few minutes later, Johnny Depp (City of Lies) bursts into the office of Life editor Bob Hayes (Bill Nighy, Emma) in by far the worst mask of this festival and snatches the check from him, it's clear that Nuances are undesirable here.

Andrew Levita's flamboyant exploration thriller (Arbitration) is a typical Berlinale Special mix of stellar show, mass entertainment and prestigious public education. But that doesn't bother either the director or Depp, whose repertoire number is the acting equivalent of Smith's noisy self-pity. Like the protagonist being bullied, bribery and assaulted, he forces himself to cooperate because more fame and more money never hurts. The misfortune caused by inhuman greed is diverted by Levitas to the sidelines of Smith's struggle. Illness and death of thousands of Japanese people are counted only in connection with the work of a white American. The scheme of fanatical thinking corresponds to the schematic setting of a standard thriller.
