Without Remorse (2021), filmed by streaming service Amazon and directed by Stefano Sollima, is an action movie based on the novel by writer Tom Clancy. A navy seal takes revenge for the loss of a family after taking part in a military operation against Russian agents.

The Herculean hero played by Michael B. Jordan in No Remorse has no room for jokes or frivolity. He becomes inflamed, and this applies not only to his muscular condition, but also to the anger that grips him. John Kelly, as the soldier is called, seeks revenge for the loss of his pregnant wife after what seems like retribution.

The film begins in Aleppo, Syria, where special forces rescue a hostage from a collapsed building. The team, which includes Kelly, was expecting to meet with Syrian soldiers, but the abduction was carried out by a group of Russian mercenaries, former military personnel. Back in the United States, those on the mission begin to fall one by one. Kelly is attacked at his home and manages to defend himself, but he is badly injured and his wife is killed.

A la Charles Bronson, in Death Wish (1974), known in Spanish as The Avenger Anonymous, after recovering, he embarks on a crusade against what is believed to be Russian troops. But Kelly is not a civilian, but a military man. He enjoys the support of Karen (Jodie Turner-Smith, Queen & Slim -2019-), his military superior, and distrusts the opaque Ritter (Jamie Bell), another higher-ranking military man than himself, and Secretary Clay (Guy Pierce), Department of Defense official.

Sollima, director of Sikario II: Soldier's Day (2018) and the TV series Gomorrah, makes here a realistic and sober action movie, perhaps a bit too much. The tone has an almost hermetically sealed seriousness, and the dialogues only provide the information needed to understand the various missions that the characters undertake during the film. The story locks up its protagonist over and over again as if they were video game levels to be solved and, logically, they get complicated.

The film is an adaptation of Tom Clancy's novel set in the 1970s in the context of the end of the Vietnam War. The writer's name is used here more as a sign than for the story itself, which is almost completely different from the original. It happens without regret today, when the American government is as grim as its Russian counterpart.

The film features very well-thought-out action sequences, such as the plane crash in which the protagonist is traveling, followed by a lengthy scene of the attack on a Russian hotel. The result makes it clear that No Remorse is yet another attempt to create a franchise, or at least create sequels. In short, the whole story aims to create the character of John Kelly as a hero in a world where there are no more patriots.
