"Moffie" means "fagot" in Afrikaans. A swear word that will be used frequently in the film of the same name. For example, when two young, battered soldiers are brought before the company because they were caught exchanging caresses in the toilet. We are in a South African training camp in the 80s: Nick (Kai Luke Brummer), our protagonist, is neither. But he might as well be in her place. Nick patiently endures the harassment that he and his comrades are exposed to day after day, endures the insult and shame of the sergeant, endures the endless marches and the psychological pressure. In the sleeping quarters, too, the pack's gruff tone reigns, weaklings are ostracized and tormented.
In this crowd of rough sociability, however, subliminal tenderness is also exchanged with one another. In addition to the brutality of everyday training, there is also a certain, half-hidden sensuality lurking. For Nick, the beautiful and strong bodies of his comrades radiate a permanent threat. He suffers because he is surrounded by hordes of men whom he secretly desires but is not allowed to desire. His looks are evasive and his gestures shy, because the charm of the forbidden is always present. The danger of looking at one's counterpart for too long or touching them too ambiguously is always palpable. One childhood trauma is Nick's lesson enough. Because as a teenager he was caught gazing in the swimming pool, which caused an embarrassing scandal.
During a long night of training in the trenches, he and the recruit Dylan (Ryan De Villiers) unexpectedly get a little closer. It remains a comforting huddle together, which, however, raises hopes in Nick. These very hopes soon build into deeper feelings that could get him and Dylan (who, in turn, does not seem averse) into serious trouble. Plus, Dylan is also a sideways man who keeps messing with the sergeant. Until one day he takes it too far ...
The images are as poetic as they were in Barry Jenkins' Oscar hit “Moonlight” and, in what they show, as cruel as Stanley Kubrick's anti-war manifesto “Full Metal Jacket”. Director Oliver Hermanus sheds light on the contradictions of male self-assertion and shows that it is unfortunately often based on the degradation of the weaker. How he interweaves the constant struggle and test of strength with delicate undertones that thwart and question this very model of masculinity is a great art! “Moffie” is important, fascinating and psychologically complex queer cinema that will resonate in the memory for a long time.
Moffie is set in South Africa in the early 1980s, when the apartheid regime is still firmly in power. Due to a border dispute with neighboring Angola, a two-year military service is compulsory for white young men over the age of 16.
